When Kids Like The Box More Than the Toy: The Benefits of Playing with Everyday Objects
“Loose parts” are materials not originally intended for play, which children can manipulate, modify, and repurpose during their play. The flexibility of loose parts allows children to engage with them in diverse and creative ways.
Numerous theories and educational approaches emphasize the importance of children’s play with various materials, collectively contributing to a comprehensive understanding of how materials support young children’s exploration, development, and learning.
This workshop will provide an overview of the historical foundations of loose parts play, highlighting key figures and theories that have shaped the field. It will also compare the materials emphasized in different educational approaches with the current application of loose parts in early learning environments.
Additionally, the workshop will explore four critical dimensions of children’s interactions with loose parts—materials, space, relationships, and time—illustrating how these elements collectively create environments that foster meaningful and high-quality play experiences.
