What is ‘Discipline’ through the Lens of Children’s Rights?

We often hear the phrase, “Children need discipline!” But the word “discipline” can mean very different things to different people.  Does it mean physical punishment, like spanking?  Does it mean emotional punishment, like time-out?  And if children have rights, what happens to discipline?  In this webinar, Dr. Durrant will look at discipline through various lenses to help us understand why this word is so controversial.  She will provide a framework for thinking about discipline in the childcare context, which emphasizes children’s rights to protection, dignity and participation in their learning.

This is a webinar.

Dr. Joan Durrant is a developmental psychologist who created a parent support program called, Positive Discipline in Everyday Parenting (PDEP) that is based on principles of children’s rights.  After teaching at the University of Manitoba for 32 years, she retired to establish a non-profit organization that implements PDEP across Canada and internationally.  She is the lead author of the Joint Statement on Physical Punishment of Children and Youth.

Suitable for child care providers, child care workforce, and parents.
