The Essential Guide: BC Employment Laws’ Basics, May 9 & 16, 2023, virtually 6:00 – 8:00pm

Justice Education Society created an Essential Guide for ECE educators and employers so they may become familiar with their rights and obtain further understanding of BC Employment Laws. The training includes two learning modules (Part 1 and Part 2). These have been tailored to meet the needs and interests of Early Childhood Educator participants. This is very important information to know.

Session one, May 9, is tailored to provide Early Childhood Educators with an introduction to BC Employment Laws and their basic legal concepts.

It will cover:

·Identify what laws apply to their employment situation
·Understand their fundamental rights and options when it comes to quitting or being terminated
·Rights during employment (minimum standards for hours, vacation, overtime)
·Leave entitlements, such as maternity and parental leave
·Options for help
Session two, May 16th, will be tailored to provide Early Childhood Educators with a more in-depth knowledge base regarding BC Employment Laws, supplemental legal concepts, and employment contracts, in relation to the BC Employment Standards Act.

It will cover:

Understand the basic principles of employee vs. independent contractor
Knowledge of the various employment contracts and an understanding of how they are applied in the workplace
Understand the legal concepts of constructive dismissal, and contract fundamental changes
Distinguish the differences between dismissal with cause and without cause, and severance entitlement
Understand the clauses of non-solicitation and non-competition agreements, and the restrictions organizations use to decrease the risk of litigation
