Tension in the Classroom: Encounters with Tough Topics
How do you respond when you encounter tough topics in early years settings?
Tough topics such as death, divorce, racism, sexism, colonial histories, current events, LGBTQ2S+, or global warming can be difficult for educators to address and can create tensions in the classroom. This workshop focuses on embracing the tensions of difficult subjects we may encounter with children and families, looking at why it’s important to critically engage with children, how to have tough conversations with families, and ways to engage with tough topics in developmentally appropriate ways. The goal of this workshop is that educators will leave feeling more confident in their abilities to engage with tensions and tough topics within the early years settings.
