Neurodiverse-Affirming Behavioural Detectives
In today’s diverse & dynamic child care environments, educators are increasingly supporting children with complex & varied needs. This 5-hour workshop will inspire & empower early childhood educators to shift into a mindset of curiosity, compassion, & neurodiverse-affirming practice.
Participants will be able to:
– Appreciate the value of neurodiverse-affirming practice
– Identify the neurobiology underlying “challenging” behaviour
– Differentiate between sensory, emotional, & cognitive components of behaviour
– Explain the impacts of developmental trauma & adaptive attachment patterns
– Support regulation & social engagement through sensory & relationally-informed strategies
– Develop greater self-awareness and self-regulation practices to sustain themselves in their work
Kim Barthel is an occupational therapist, multi-disciplinary speaker, mentor and best-selling author who is active in supporting people in many contexts globally. She is passionate about understanding neurobiology, complex behaviour, trauma-sensitive practice, sensory processing, movement, attachment and mental health. In 2019 Kim was honoured to receive the Award of Merit from the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapy, and with 41+ years of practice in helping people to be their best selves, she is still learning every day.
