How Do Children Learn About Numbers across Cultures and How Can We Support Them Through Play
This interactive workshop explores how children’s cultural backgrounds and language experiences shape the development of early numeracy skills. Drawing on current research in early childhood education, we examine the sociocultural foundations of numeracy skills and knowledge. Participants will reflect on how cultural values, home numeracy practices, and multilingual environments influence how children understand and engage with mathematical concepts.
The session emphasizes the role of play-based learning and material affordances in supporting diverse learners. Through hands-on exploration of culturally inclusive toys, manipulatives, and everyday materials, participants will consider how intentional selection and use of play materials can promote learning.
