Duty to Report

We all have a role and responsibility to keep children and youth safe from abuse and neglect. Being in the community connected to children, youth and families, you are well positioned to identify and report child maltreatment and to support children and youth who may have experienced harm. This presentation will assist you to be alert to signs of child maltreatment, prepare you to report your concerns and give you some instruction to best support children and youth. Together this partnership will assist child protection agencies to address and mitigate child protection concerns.

Presenters: MCFD Practice Consultants – Christina Hecht & Zoe Mah

Christina has enjoyed the privilege of working in various communities with children, youth and families for the past 22 years. In 2005, they completed their Bachelor of Social Work with a specialization in Child Welfare and has predominantly worked in child protection and guardianship with MCFD since. Christina is currently a Guardianship Practice Consultant for the South Fraser Practice Development Team for MCFD, supporting teams across the unceded shared traditional territories of the Coast Salish Peoples.

Zoe is a dedicated professional whose career has been devoted to advocating for the well-being of children, youth, and families. Her work has consistently been driven by a commitment to creating safe, nurturing environments and empowering families to make transformative changes in their lives. Since 2023, Zoe has been sharing her expertise as a Child Protection Practice Consultant for the South Fraser MCFD Practice Branch. In this leadership role, she supports teams and their leaders across the South Fraser region by offering policy guidance, practice support, and targeted learning sessions. Zoe also facilitates team consultations in complex family circumstances, using strategies that are compassionate and effective while ensuring that child safety remains paramount.
