Discover the Outdoors in Autumn

Back to school and back to the great outdoors! What’s up in the fall? Our ecosystems are still very busy and learning to adapt to our longer, warmer summers. Hundreds of birds are starting to migrate south on the Pacific Flyway. Resources are starting to decline for pollinators and the leaf crunching season has opened. During this 4-hour session participants will:

Discover the lifecycle of leaves
Benefits of fungi and mushrooms, edible and poisonous
Autumn blooms including sunflowers, sunflower seeds and the birds they attract
Dispel the myths and explain the benefits of spiders
Learn about related activities and resources

Suitable for ECE students, parents, adult instructors/administrators, intermediate and experienced early care and learning professionals working with children of all ages, from infants/toddlers to school age children, including children with extra support needs.

Facilitator(s): Joni Wright

Joni is an Organic Land Care Professional, landscape designer and educator with a career in event management, nonprofit and business development. She is a life-long learner earning a Human Services Management degree in her 40s and continuing her studies in organic landcare at Gaia College in Duncan BC. Joni has delivered virtual workshops about community gardening, creating habitat for native bees, pollinators, insects and birds throughout the past two years, and has facilitated a variety of workshops on planting native plants, invasive species plant ID and removal, as well as outdoor education and eco-tours for K-12 school groups. Joni is passionate about sharing her experience, and enjoys helping provide valuable resources to aid in educating the leaders of tomorrow.
