Cultivating Caring Children: The Roots of Social Responsibility
We all want children who are caring, considerate, and guided by an inner sense of responsibility—but these qualities cannot be taught through instruction, rewards, or consequences. This presentation explores how empathy and moral responsibility grow naturally when the right developmental conditions are in place. Drawing on developmental science, it helps adults understand how caring emerges from healthy attachment, emotional maturity, and a child’s capacity to hold others in mind without losing themselves. Participants gain a clear roadmap for nurturing empathy and preserving a child’s caring spirit—so children grow into individuals who can act with integrity, think twice, and do the right thing even when no one is watching. The presentation also draws
on Dr. MacNamara’s children’s picture book The Sorry Plane, which gently teases out these dynamics and illustrates how a caring heart is restored, protected, and sustained as children grow into socially responsible human beings. Attendees will receive a copy of her book. Register Here
